Hi fellow members: Under the heading, "Locations for viewing wildlife...", I thought some might enjoy knowing of a few outstanding Quabbin vistas? After more than 30 years of trekking through Quabbin Reservation I find myself coming back to these scenic spots where, along the way, flora and fauna are readily observed. Allow me to share one in this letter. Soapstone Hill in the Petersham area of Quabbin is one of my favorites for it's grand view and opportunity to view Eagles and Hawks. It abuts the Women's Federated Club State Park, a well-maintained but sparsely used camping area. There are many picnic tables and fireplaces and a Sani-can here which make this a great sojurn for families and small groups. From here it is a gentle 15 minute hike to the top of Soapstone easily made by even young children. What an opportunity to introduce youngsters to the wonders of Quabbin. From the summit you can see Leveau Island, Stevens Island, Mt. L, Mt. Zion, Mt. Pomeroy, Little Quabbin Hill, Den Hill, School Hill, and on a fair day, the Lookout Tower at Quabbin Hill some 15 miles away. Last Wednesday, I observed an Immature Eagle, a lone Turkey Vulture and a flock of six or eight cream colored pigeon sized birds which I could not identify and counted five Hermit Thrushes vocalizing.
