Hello List Members: While the Overlook at Quabbin Park is a popular Eagle watching location, there's just one area for the opposite end that's nearly as convenient for bird watching. Less than five minutes from the parking area, New Salem Lookout overviews the northeastern end of Quabbin. Though not well known by the general public, it is a popular site for the locals. Visiting yesterday I observed a Turkey Vulture and two smaller hawks which were just too quick for this novice to make a positive i.d. A large flock of crows had gathered in the trees to my left and were contesting who could make the most noise. A fast approaching thunderstorm dampened my stay. The sky darkened quickly, the wind came up and I retreated for cover just before Rip Van Winkle tipped over the water bucket. For a photo and directions: Click here.
