General directions:
The Federation Forest is off of Rt. 122 where it runs north-south between the intersection with 202 and Petersham. Driving down Rt. 122, look for the State sign that reads 'State Forest Next Right', (or 'Left'), depending on which direction your coming from. The parking area is at the end of the road where a gravel road runs perpendicular to it.
Proceed past the red gate up the hill and straight through the camping area (about a 12 min. walk) to Site 12 which will be on your left. Turn left at Site 12 and proceed straight ahead through the small field looking for the old cart road just off to your right.
The cartroad turns into a well defined path through the woods upwards to the ridge of Soapstone. As you journey up the ridgeline note an occassional peek of the reservoir through the trees to your right. This is a pretty yet gentle hike culminating in a gorgeous view of the reservoir. Enjoy.
